Innovative DEsigns for high-performAnce Low-cost HVDC Converters (IDEAL HVDC)
Federal Agency
Sub-Department
Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO), Office of Electricity (OE)
Purpose
To invest in research and development to support continued innovation and cost reduction for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) voltage source converter (VSC) transmission systems.
Applicant and/or Project Eligibility Requirements
More information forthcoming, but based on the notice of intent, institutions of higher education may be eligible applicants.
Decarbonization Considerations
HVDC can increase the power grid’s capacity to receive, transmit, and deliver energy more efficiently than existing solutions. HVDC transmission can improve grid resilience, security, and operation flexibility. It can also accommodate the integration of renewable energy to reach the nation’s goal of carbon neutrality and help reduce the cost of transmitting electricity over long distances.
Equity Considerations
